What makes good yoga pose instruction?
How to set up the pose
A yoga pose needs to be stable for you to be able to relax and experience the pose fully. Setting up the pose properly will give you a strong base to stay stable.
How to get into the pose
Even a tiny change in the angle as you get into a pose changes the muscles you end up targeting. If you get into the pose incorrectly you don’t end up targeting the intended muscles. If you always miss those muscles, you never get to fix the issues in that area and bring overall balance to your body. You want to get into the pose correctly so don’t miss the intended muscles.
How to go deeper into the pose
A yoga pose will bring your body to the outer edge of its comfort zone. From there you will work on slightly extending the range of your comfort zone, yet not too much that your body starts tensing up. It takes coordination of breathing and very subtle movements to create space in your joints and lengthen your muscles. Then you can naturally go deeper into the pose without strain.
How to get out of the pose
Knowing how to out of a pose is of utmost importance for your safety. While working deeply into a pose, your muscles come to a very stretched state. If you put more strains on muscles in this state, it could cause small muscle tears or greater injury. Avoiding additional strain while getting out of the pose is very important for the longevity of your practice.
Modifications for different levels
A yoga class has many people. Every person has different physical and mental capacity. Yet everyone can still take the same class because there can be various modifications for each yoga pose. It is important that you start from a position where you can feel comfortable. If you are not comfortable, you cannot relax, then you cannot reap the benefit of yoga practice.
